Otherworldly

Over the Moon Music

2025

I began work on Otherworldly in 2019, shortly before releasing Messages from the Resonator with Globular. At first, the aim was to create some tracks which would work well alongside tracks from Messages in a live set. Over time it developed in its own direction defined by a limited pallet of sounds: 808, breakbeats, analogue synths, flute and bass guitar - the latter was an instrument I didn't know how to play and had to learn from scratch! The writing process was arduous with dozens of sketches being thrown out. The final cut contains only those which "stuck" and were able to be chained into longer multi-section forms. It's not a concept album, but the shapes and energy levels of the tracks in sequence describe an overall journey. (There are some deeper structures there for those who want to take a dive.) Every ambient producer should write a Dune-inspired album at some point (Klaus Schulz wrote two!) and I guess this is mine. Where Geolinguistic had ocean sounds and a watery sound world, Otherworldly explores an arid environment full of silence and tension. To this end, artists such as Desert Dwellers, Dubsahara, and Kaya Project were an inspiration. The title is a nod to Thomas Halliday's celebrated natural history book Otherlands and this album similarly explores deep time, geography, layers, and evolution. I am excited to release the album with Over The Moon Music, as I first encountered psychill music through one of DJ Maggie's mixes, and cofounder Bluetech's album Prima Materia was one of my favourites when initially exploring this genre.
